BMW's attack on the Mercedes Sl and Porsche 928 resulted in the birth of the 8 Series. Only the best and the most powerful were good enough to compete. For example, the 8 series were only available with their muscular 5-litre V12 engine, which was linked to a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the tracks were given by an electronic accelerator. When BMW presented their newest member at the fair in Frankfurt, 5000 orders were immediately placed; both the press and the public were impressed and enthusiastic about all the technical firsts that were hidden under this hood. At the time of launch, the 850 was the most advanced car on the market, and more than 1 billion Deutsche Mark had been spent on this development. Throughout the life of the 8 series, only about 30,000 cars left the line, due to the recession and rising fuel prices in the 1990s.
