No, the Porsche 911 SC 3.1 is not a myth, it really exists! When the Porsche 911 Super Carrera (SC) 3.0 was introduced in 1978, it was equipped with 180 hp, so 20 hp less than the 911 Carrera 3.0, which in turn had less power than its predecessor, the 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI. This was due to the stricter emissions requirements forcing Porsche to downgrade their models step by step, when if we are to believe their designation it should actually be the opposite. Or was it just a stunt by Porsche to put their 240 hp strong 928, which was also introduced at the time, in a positive light?
In any case, after many dissatisfied reactions from their customer customers, and yet the enormous demand for the ‘dying’ 911, Porsche could, of course, not offer a ‘watered down’ model to their top customers. That is why, on behalf of Porsche and the Porsche dealer Max Moritz and Alois Ruf, a few changes were made to a small production number (approximately 250 copies): larger boreholes (from 95 mm to 98 mm), modified 3.1 turbo cylinders, higher compression ratio, 915 gearbox with longer 5th gear, revised cooling and higher fuel pressure. These changes enabled Porsche to deliver a 210 hp strong 'SC 3.1' to their top customers, which could not be distinguished from the 180 hp 911 SC 3.0 by non-experts.
This copy, which was delivered to its first German owner in 1980, is one of the few 911 SC 3.1s made by Porsche. This 911 has the highly sought-after and beautiful ‘Oak Green Metallic’ finish, with a black leather interior. This Porsche is still in an excellent condition today, the engine and chassis number are matching, as are the colours. The car starts quickly and drives a lot better than the standard 911 SC 3.0. The engine picks up at about 2800RPM where the SC 3.0 does at 3,300RPM. In addition, this 911 SC 3.1 is also a good 100 kg lighter than a Carrera ‘G’ 3.2. Optionally, sports seats and an electric sunroof were chosen.
Needless to say, this 3.1 takes on the title of ‘Super Carrera’.
This extremely unique and ‘secret’ Porsche 911 SC 3.1 is now available at Rock N Roll Classics.
